DOI: 10.1590/S1679-45082017AI3882 A 36-year-old woman with a sudden history of low back pain radiating into the right lower extremity. The physical examination revealed paraparesis, saddle anesthesia and urinary incontinence. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed lipoma of the filum terminale (hyperintense sign within the filum terminale) (Figure 1). The patient underwent surgery without delay with intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (Figure 2), and she had a full recovery of all neurological deficits. Figure 1. Pre-operative images. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images showing a lipoma of the filum terminale (hyperintense sign within the filum terminale, white arrow) in sagittal (A) and axial (B) planes A B A

Paraganglioma of the filum terminale mimicking neurinoma: Case report

BACKGROUND Paraganglioma of the filum terminale is an uncommon tumor of cauda equina region. Lumbar radiculopathies are revelations that can get complicated from cauda equina syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows the diagnosis without distinguishing it from a neurofibroma. Only histopathological study can bring certainty in the diagnosis. The treatment of choice is a complete remova...

Acute onset of paraganglioma of filum terminale: A case report and surgical treatment

INTRODUCTION Paragangliomas of filum terminale are rare benign tumors, arising from the adrenal medulla or extra-adrenal paraganglia. These lesions usually present with chronic back pain and radiculopathy and only two cases of acute neurological deficit have been reported in literature. PRESENTATION OF CASE A case with an acute paraplegia and cauda equina syndrome due to an hemorrhagic paraga...

Surgical treatment for lipomyelomeningocele in children.

BACKGROUND Lipomyelomeningocele (LMM) is a common and severe closed neural tube defect in children. Because of the complex anatomy of LMM and the difficulty in assessing the value of surgery, the management of patients with LMM is controversial. This study was undertaken to evaluate effective techniques and procedures in surgical treatment of LMM and to assess the value of early neurosurgical i...

© 2016 Surgical Neurology International | Published by Wolters Kluwer Medknow Abstract Background: Cauda equina paragangliomas (CEPs) are rare spinal tumors that are mostly misdiagnosed preoperatively as ependymomas or schwannomas on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Clinically, they usually present with the gradual onset of back pain and radiculopathy rather than an acute cauda equina syndrome...

Intramedullary Paraganglioma of Filum Terminale: A Rare Case Report

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors that arise from neural crest cells of the sympathetic or parasympathetic autonomic nervous system, most frequently found in the Glomus jugulare and the carotid bodies. Paragangliomas of the Central nervous system are uncommon. In spinal cord they arise intradural extramedullarily with most common site being filum terminale. Here we presented one of such ...
